Varivax (Chicken Pox Vaccine) is routinely given at 12 months of age and a second dose is given between the ages of 4 to 6 years when a child receives their kindergarten vaccinations. Current school requirements are 2 doses for k-2 grades and 6-12 grades. Children in grades 3 -5 are currently only required to have one dose with their second dose required upon entry into 6th grade.
In the event of an outbreak within a school, any child who is not vaccinated will be excluded from school for 21 days after the last case is diagnosed. Also, children in grades 3 – 5 will be required to receive their second dose of Varivax.
To help prevent an outbreak in LaGrange County, the Health Department will be offering an additional clinic on Thursday, December 29, 2011, to allow parents to get their children vaccinated. Please call (260)499-4182 ext 228 to schedule an appointment.
